Sam sat perched on the great stone wall that was slowly falling apart. Parts of the surface turned to dust and blew away into nothing as he looked down at his two friends, standing the large flower patch of blood red and brown flowers. “Come down here Sam!” He heard Kate yell. Always bossy that one.

“Do you always have to fucking tell me what to do?” He yelled at her before mumbling swears under his breath. He wished he could control himself better. He jumped off the wall and plummeted until his brain fashioned the giant seagull that popped into existence and gently brought him down. His guardian, a white tiger with wide snowy owl wings jumped after him and floated down safely.

Sam kicked some dirt at Kate’s freckled face.

  “Hey!” She yelled. “Stop that!”

Of course that only made Sam want to do it again so he did.

  “Sam.” Brent said calmly.

Nothing phased Brent, he always managed to be calm. Sam looked down at his bare feet, causing his hair to fall into his face. “Sorry.”He said sarcasticaly, then without meaning it he blurted out, “You fuck head.” Laughter followed.

“Calm down.” Kate tried telling Sam as he concentrated on the ground, making a lemon tree sprout. Then he grabbed a lemon ripped it open and sucked the juiced. “Holy fuck that was sour.” He laughed again, loudly.

“What did you expect?” Brent asked looking at him passively.

Sam patiently tried to contain his energy as they sat, squashing the flowers. They had something important to discuss, they had been seeing nightmare ghosts and knew their friend Savannah would be joining the dream world shortly and they had to make up a plan to help her get through that first, terrifying night when her nightmares would set out to kill her, they had all been trough, all with the help of another, but they knew Savannah and her wild imagination would make things more difficult. After some discussion and theorising about what Savannah’s purpose would be in the dream world they finally headed back to their hideout. Sam climbed the stone steps of the tower, jumping on each step as hard as he could. Kate rolled her eyes at him while Brent merely walked behind them patiently. Their plan had been concocted and they sat around, summoning chairs from their imagination and fooling around waiting for the next day when the execution of their plan could begin.

Sam looked out the window, which was just a hole in the stone wall shaped like an arch at the semi dark sky sparkling with what looked like silver stars many times smaller and many times greater in number than the stars in the real world.

  Part 1 Nightmares

  Chapter 1

I grabbed my sandwich and juice off the counter violently and looked at the lunch lady I just paid.

“Thank you.” I said with sarcasm, showing her a large fake smile I accompanied with murderous and narrowed green eyes.

The lunch lady gave me a dumb look with her half open mouth, not even an apology for accusing me of steeling in front of all the other students in the line just because she didn’t my juice right away through the coke bottle bottoms she seemed to have mistaken for glasses and I hadn’t been paying enough attention to realise she wasn’t charging me for it. I really don’t know where they get some of these people. Some are very nice and smiling and put me in a good enough mood to actually smile back. I wonder how those lunch ladies tolerate the others like four eyes here. It wasn’t like I had anything against people with glasses, my mom and one of my friends have glasses, it is just easier to mentally insult people about things that are visible.

I stomped away, giving her the middle finger when she was turned away and exited the school, pushing open the doors like I did everything else, without reservation.

“You sure told her.” Nick, my brother laughed. “Thank you.” He said in a girly voice, tossing his longish dark brown hair back and batting his eyelashes. They walked out into the sun and I stuck my tongue out at him but then ignored him as I passed by students handing out at the entrance.

I know what you must be thinking, poor Nick, her baby sister won’t even pay attention to him, which is exactly what he was whining about. But what you don’t know is, no one else can SEE him. Fortunately I had the sense not to tell anyone about it in the past two years after he supposedly died and came to keep me company or I would be placidly told I didn’t have a brother and would be referred to the nearest psych ward. Even my own friends, Kate with her OCD, Sam with his tourettes and antisocial Brent think I should get help. Why don’t I? Why because I don’t think I’m crazy. How so? Nick has often told me things there was no way I could know, thus, he’s not in my head. Sunglasses appeared on his face with a snap of his finger. I was pretty sure that finger snap was unnecessary but he has a flair for the dramatic that annoys the crap out of me. The one thing I got used to was the absence of a shadow. I walked past the entrance and headed to my gang’s little hideout, an old building in the woods next to the school. That’s one thing we have a lot of in Elmwood, trees. I approached the group and sat down on the half collapsed wall. The conversation they had all been in stopped and I lifted one eyebrow, they had been acting weird lately. And even Sam, who usually can’t keep a secret hadn’t told me what was going on.

“When you all dome staring at me for no apparent reason, we should start eating.”

  Their eyes averted.

“Hey fuck buddy!” Sam yelled giving me an overly dramatic high five.

Trust me, it isn’t what you think, Sam only calls me that because I’m the only other one in the gang that actually swears once and a while. Nick started laughing like every time Sam used that term. I gave him an evil glance. Sometimes I wonder why I don’t try eating alone again, but no matter where I hide, they find me so I can’t get much peace and quiet anyways, plus, even though I’d never admit it, I’ve grown to like them.

“And you would know that and make fun of me if you were really in my head.” I murmured to Nick who, sunglasses gone, gave me an innocent look as in trying to say, “Me? Make fun of you? Why would you even think that?”

Fortunately the others ignored me. I tossed back my annoying mane of blondish brown hair, the colour of the desert sand, it kept blowing into my eyes. That’s when Sam pulled my hair back painfully and tied it back with an elastic. I howled and Kate reprimanded Sam.

“Hey! Don’t get mad at me! At least her fucking hair is out of her eyes now!”

“Thanks, I think.” I rolled my eyes, unfortunately my shorter hair was still in my eyes but I wasn’t going to mention it out of fear of what he’d do to them. “Next time be more gentle about it.”

My eyes fired missiles at him. By then I was half way through my sandwich so I downed my juice and almost chocked on it when Sam hit me on the back.

“Sam.” I said slowly in a voice resembling a low growl.

“Just wanted to talk to you! My mom says it okay if you all come for a sleepover tonight.”

I opened my mouth to talk but he put his hand o nit and I had to resist the urge to bite it.

“Ah, ah, ah I know what you’re going to say, why should I go over? I have no reason to. Well bam, now you do! My mom is making your favourite, lasagna and we just bought a movie style popcorn machine and my dad got us Twisted Eternity.”

&nb
sp; “Buft ifh no efen outfh yet.” I mumbled through his hand.

“I’m sorry?” Nick said while making a show of cupping his hand around his ear and leaning towards her. “I didn’t quite understand you.”

I tossed Sam’s hand to the side violently and hissed “Shut up.” At Nick. The other thankfully didn’t react to that.

I had to admit defeat, I had been counting down the days till Twisted Eternity came out. A morbid horror movie about someone dying, ending us in hell and having to fight his way out as all those who found their way to hell did, out of fear of being stuck there for eternity. I turned to Sam with narrowed eyes.

“Fine, I’ll come, but only if you guys promise to keep it down.” I said, exasperated.

I violently stuffed my stuff back in my lunch bag and we headed back inside.
